Senior Lecturer in Computational Mathematics

The Department of Mathematical Sciences pursues internationally successful research and an extensive education.

Mathematics is fundamental to science and engineering and has an increasingly prominent part in other disciplines as well. Mathematics is also a subject in itself, and fundamental research is a necessary condition for future applications.

The Department is part of both Chalmers University of Technology and the University of Gothenburg and is situated in the middle of Campus Johanneberg. It is the largest mathematics department in the Nordic countries and has about 200 employees, with a number of research groups in mathematics and mathematical statistics which together provide a creative and cross-fertilizing setting.

Information about the department
The department is international with frequent exchanges with other universities around the world. It provides a friendly, creative, and supportive atmosphere with a steady flow of international guests. We support our lecturers in their efforts to be promoted to the rank of full professor. We are a family friendly workplace and we strive to make it possible for employees to find a balance between work and private life. More information about us is available on our website.

The Division of Applied Mathematics and Statistics conducts internationally recognized research in areas such as the theory and implementation of finite element methods, inverse wave propagation problems, kinetic equations, stochastic partial differential equations, geometric integration, optimization, biostatistics, bioinformatics, spatial statistics, and artificial intelligence.

Chalmers is making a large investment in AI through Chalmers AI Research Centre (CHAIR). We have access to high performance computing resources through Chalmers Centre for Computational Science and Engineering (C3SE).

The Division of Applied Mathematics and Statistics is now recruiting a senior lecturer in computational mathematics, understood in a broad sense, in order to strengthen our existing research groups.

Major responsibilities
You are expected to conduct independent research and you are highly encouraged to collaborate with other researchers in the university.

You will teach mathematics at all levels, including supervision of undergraduate, master, and PhD students. Our academic year is divided into four quarters. It is usually possible to organize the teaching assignments so that one or two quarters are free of teaching.

As senior lecturer, you are also expected to take part in leadership and administration, and to apply actively for external funding. Another important aspect involves collaboration within academia and with society at large.

Position summary
Full-time permanent employment.

Qualifications
As a senior lecturer in Computational Mathematics, you are expected to have a doctoral degree in mathematics or in another relevant field. A good record of academic research is required. Your research should be in computational mathematics, including, for example, mathematical analysis and development of computational methods in science and engineering.

You must be accustomed to teaching in the university and be a skilled educator. For this reason, we place a great deal of emphasis on your pedagogical portfolio. Courses in teaching in higher education of at least 15 credits or equivalent skills are required for the employment. If courses in teaching in higher education are missing at the time of employment, the employee is expected to acquire these within two years.

The position requires sound verbal and written communication skills in English. If Swedish is not your native language, you must be able to teach in Swedish on the undergraduate level after two years. Chalmers offers Swedish courses.

You should have the potential to lead and develop research and teaching. A good ability to collaborate with organizations outside of academia, such as with schools, the public and companies, is a qualification for Chalmers faculty members.

Chalmers continuously strives to be an attractive employer. Equality and diversity are substantial foundations in all activities at Chalmers.
