The School of Chemistry is seeking an innovative and visionary individual to develop new ways of teaching molecular science in Virtual Reality and associated visualisation and modelling technologies.
You will be responsible for the development and delivery of new teaching content and methods in visualisation and interactive simulation in virtual reality. You will feed into developing our core curriculum in Digital Chemistry and Scientific Computing. There will be significant opportunity to contribute to the preparation and development of content, both independently and by contributing to units led by other members of staff.
You should have significant experience of teaching in higher education with evidence of working independently at a specialist level, along with the ability to develop, implement and evaluate effective educational tools and content, making full use of current insights and emerging opportunities in technology-enhanced learning.
The School of Chemistry at the University of Bristol is an internationally leading centre of research and education in chemistry and one of the UK's largest and most prestigious chemistry departments. There are currently around 60 members of academic staff and 30 permanent research officers and fellows, together with around 80 research assistants and associates funded by external sponsors. These members of staff are supported by a large team of technical, administrative and secretarial staff.
Bristol ChemLabS (Bristol Chemical Laboratory Sciences) is a UK Centre for Excellence in Teaching and Learning. From 2020, the School is offering unique new degree programmes in Chemistry with Scientific Computing (BSc and MSci), which will train a new kind of scientist, with a strong foundation in Chemistry, and strong skills in scientific computing, as well as the understanding of how to combine these to best effect. The School also leads two EPSRC Centres for Doctoral Training (Technology-Enhanced Chemical Synthesis and Aerosol Science).
The School have recently invested in a dedicated virtual reality teaching space, allowing the concurrent accommodation of several students supported by a demonstrator to interact in VR. Some of our initial work in this area has recently been published in the Journal of Chemical Education (J. Chem. Educ. 2019, 96, 11, 2488-2496, DOI: 10.1021/acs.jchemed.9b00181).
