PhD candidate in environmental epidemiology

The Swiss Tropical and Public Health Institute (Swiss TPH) is a world-leading institute in global health with a particular focus on low- and middle-income countries. Associated with the University of Basel, Swiss TPH combines research, services, and education and training at the local, national and international level. About 850 people from more than 80 nations work at Swiss TPH focusing on infectious and non-communicable diseases, environment, society and health as well as health systems and interventions.
Within the Department of Epidemiology and Public Health (EPH), our Unit "Environmental Exposures and Health" (EEH) is focused on research related to the many environmental exposures: including air pollution, noise, electromagnetic fields, heatwaves, green space and airborne pollen. We are looking for a PhD candidate in environmental epidemiology

Your position
Your future PhD project "The effects of airborne pollen on cardiorespiratory health and allergic symptoms" is funded by the Swiss National Science Foundation. The project aims to better quantify the respiratory, cardiovascular and pre-clinical health effects of airborne pollen and their burden on public health. Within this project, we will set up a panel study, in which you will follow allergic people throughout the allergy season, studying a range of health outcomes. You will work together with study nurses, and help collect, manage and analyse data collected from classic in-person health assessments, as well as new tools available to modern-day epidemiology, such as apps and wearables. This study will contribute to a better personalized forecasting of allergic symptoms, and enhance quality of life for the allergic population.
The PhD candidate will be joining a multidisciplinary research team focusing on exposure modelling, data science, environmental epidemiology, and practical measurement studies. The successful candidate will be registered in the PhD program in Epidemiology/Public Health of the University of Basel.

Your profile
" Master degree level in epidemiology, public health, health sciences, medicine or a similar field
" Knowledge on quantitative analysis skills (preferably R)
" Good programming and analytical skills
" Excellent command of German (must) and English (speaking and writing)
" Good communication and organizational skills
" Strong spirit of team work and initiative

The successful candidate will be employed by Swiss TPH at the salary rate defined by the Swiss National Science Foundation for doctoral students. The PhD position will be for a period of four years.
