Using the freeze-drying technique we have shown that it is possible to make wheat gluten foams. It is possible vary, in a controlled way, the cell structure by altering the foam material composition and the freezing conditions. We have also shown that the foams have very appealing fire properties; the material does not drip, the fire self-extinguishes and a large part of the material survives as a char skeleton. Hence it may be possible to avoid flame-retardants in the final foams. Most foams are rigid and easy to machine, however, we have also been able to make soft foams with a denser backing/support. The foams have mainly open cells, suitable for sound insulation, but for heat insulation purposes we need to obtain a very high porosity with small closed cells. As the need to insulate houses more effectively increases the thickness of the insulation, with today’s materials, must be thicker and thicker. Hence there is a need to improve the insulation properties beyond todays state of the art technology. In the proposed project we aim at ultra-insulation properties using wheat gluten. The approach is to obtain high porosity with very small closed cells by 1) changing the foam process, 2) adding nucleation agents, 3) increasing the strength of the cell walls using nanofillers and/or 4) changing the gluten molecular structure.

En del av Smiths forskning är inriktad på utveckling av nya terapeutiska strategier för genetiska sjukdomar. Dessa projekt inkluderar användning av nukleinsyror som modifierar genuttryck genom reglering av alternativ RNA-splitsning. Modifiering av splitsningsmönster med hjälp av antisense oligonukleotider representerar en metod med stor terapeutisk potential, som kan användas för flera typer av genetiska sjukdomar och cancer.

The key questions addressed by FloodChange are: When, where, how have floods changed in Europe? Why do floods change? How sensitive are floods to changes in land use and climate? How confident can we be about predicting future changes in floods? For the first time, it will be possible to systematise the effects of land use and climate on floods, which will provide a vital step towards predicting how floods will change in the future.

The main project goal is to develop state-of-the-art silicon compatible switches and modulators for high-speed (40 Gbit/s + modulation) with small footprint and low energy dissipation for fiber-optic communication and computer interconnect systems.

The overall goal is to evaluate the use of SiC devices in power converters for various applications such as industrial drives, motor control, welding, battery charging, power supplies, generation, distribution and conditioning of electrical energy.

Tjänsten avser en fyraårig tidsbegränsad plats, men kan vid max 20 % institutionstjänstgöring, vanligtvis undervisning, förlängas ytterligare ett år. Forskarstuderande ska vara inskriven vid KTH.

Tjänsten ingår i PDCs supportgrupp och innehavaren kommer att arbeta med akademiska forskare i bioinformatik och kommer speciellt att fokusera på behoven hos SciLifeLab (www.scilifelab.se/). Arbetsuppgifterna kommer att innefatta installation och underhåll av applikationer inom bioinformatik, både på PDC- och SNIC-resurser, utveckling av användarinterface till dessa applikationer och utforskning av nya beräknings- och lagringsstrategier för bioinformatik som t.ex. cloud-system. Delar av arbetstiden bör förläggas på SciLifeLab.

Multimedia sensornätverk gör det möjligt att periodisk övervaka en miljö utan behov av att driftsätta och underhålla en infrastruktur. De förväntas spela en viktig roll i den avlägsna övervakning av offentliga platser, i miljöövervakning och i smarta hem.
