Chair (Full Professor) Long-run development of Global Wellbeing (1.0 FTE)

Utrecht University is searching for a professorship in the 'Long-Run Development of Global Wellbeing'. The chair forms part of the section of Economic and Social History (ESH) of the Department of History and Art History. The Chair will be expected to play a prominent role together with scholars at Utrecht University in the multidisciplinary initiatives within the strategic theme Institutions for Open Societies (IOS). He/she should have, or develop, a research agenda that on the one hand is interdisciplinary and addresses the core issues of the IOS programme and, on the other hand, fits within the research programme of the ESH group, which addresses global inequality with both quantitative and qualitative research methods. Teaching will involve the interdisciplinary Politics, Philosophy and Economics BA-programme, BA and MA History courses, as well as collaboration in efforts to develop new possibilities for interdisciplinary education.

The Chair of Long-Run Development of Global Wellbeing:

  • will perform research and publish internationally on institutions and wellbeing in the long run;
  • will play an initiating role in new initiatives of the strategic theme Institutions for Open Societies and will be contributing to their coordination;
  • will collaborate with Researchers within the strategic theme Institutions for Open Societies inside and outside the Faculty of Humanities;
  • will (co)supervise PhD students who are doing their research in the field of institutions and wellbeing from different research groups;
  • will teach in the Bachelor's of PPE and/or BA/(R)MA History and/or Economics;
  • will supervise Bachelor's and/or (Research) Master's theses;
  • will investigate opportunities for integration of teaching between faculties on the theme of Institutions and Wellbeing and contribute to their realization;
  • will take up management tasks and board functions within the section, department and/or strategic theme.

The successful candidate:

  • is at the top of his or her league either as a high potential or as a world research leader;
  • has an excellent publication record in international journals in fields relevant for the research area described;
  • shows potential for doing outstanding multi- or interdisciplinary research;
  • has expertise in quantitative research methods and working with big (historical) datasets;
  • has a keen eye for the societal relevance of the research in his or her field, and actively seeks to contribute to public engagement/outreach;
  • has demonstrable experience in acquiring additional and external funds to extend the research within the thematic pillar;
  • has extensive experience in academic teaching as well as experience in managing a research group and in having supervised successful PhD students.

We offer a temporary position (1.0 FTE) for five years in an international working environment. Subject to excellent performance, this will be followed by a permanent appointment. The gross salary - depending on previous qualifications and experience - ranges between €5,749 and €8,371 (consistent with the Collective Employment Agreement scale for Professors of Dutch Universities) per month for a full-time employment. Salaries are supplemented with a holiday bonus of 8% and a year-end bonus of 8.3% per year.
