Assistant Professor, Artificial Intelligence for Space Structures
The field of creating more environmentally friendly solutions to aerospace is clamouring for innovation. First-time-right manufacturing of aerospace structures is central in the fast implementation of new innovations. Designing and manufacturing for long-term durability is also critical. These elements are especially essential for space structures. But manufacturing a reliable structure in an innovative manner is not enough—first-time certification needs to be realised as well. Artificial intelligence (AI) could bring solutions to these areas. For this to be successful, two challenges need to be addressed: the lack of available data, and how to trust manufacturing and certification if there is hardly any statistical data. Therefore, an approach containing AI methods needs to be developed—specifically, an approach that uses the methods that can function with a small data set. This combination of classical aerospace and artificial intelligence has created new and exciting field: Artificial Intelligence for Manufacturing Space Structures.
In this Assistant Professor position, you will focus on developing an AI practice where ML algorithms will be the epicentre to train small data set and create knowledge bridges for problems in manufacturing and certification. The AI should consider the employment of robotic technologies. Potential areas of focus can be manufacturing of deployable structures, additive manufacturing in space where the manufacturing is done by a suite of robots. The challenges associated here will be data harvesting, data fusion and multi-disciplinary engineering as well as develop a clear box approach for certification. You will be expected to identify and develop pertinent and opportune ML techniques in relation to understanding, modeling and controlling manufacturing of certified space structures. Experience with aerospace structures is desirable, with space structures preferred. More specifically,
The Candidate should hold a Ph.D. degree in the field of mechanical/aerospace engineering or computer science with strong background in probabilistic analysis and statistics. Research experience either in the field of manufacturing of light-weight structures or the field of certification, with a good publication record in the field of machine learning, is expected.
CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT
Fixed-term contract: 6 jaar.
A tenure-track position is offered for six years. In the fifth year we’ll decide if you will be offered a permanent faculty position, based on performance indicators agreed upon at the start of the appointment. We expect that you have the potential to grow towards an Associate Professor and/or Full Professor role in the future.
Inspiring, excellent education is our central aim. We expect you to obtain a University Teaching Qualification (UTQ) within three years if you have less than five years of teaching experience. This is provided by the TU Delft UTQ programme.
